If you grew up in the 80's, you probably were exposed to many of the modern day marvels.  Outside of sporting a "mullet" and the revolutionary 3 lb. Sony Walkman with your Flock of Seagulls cassette in loop, it really was the Renaissance of Technology...

It was the decade where almost everything became "Bike Friendly"  The laptop became affordable and dropped at least 10 pounds in weight without the use of a car battery hanging from your shoulder.  The cell phone....  Wow.  The only people adversely affected by the cell phone streamlining were the Chiropractors.  Their business decreased as the number of locked hips and de-alignments reduced to an all-time low.  Everything became smaller, lighter and sportier...

But if you look outside the box to Eintien's Theory of relativity and apply it to modern day novelties, you'll find today that the first generation iPod now too, looks like a frisbee when compared to the ones on the shelf today at the friendly neighborhood Apple Store.  Things in the 80's became so small and compact, that the 90's required them to start making them bigger, so we could use them...........

Some years back however, I remember walking into a Marine Store and among the Raytheon Radar devices and Loran C consoles, a GPS or Global Positioning System device, the size of an outboard engine, would now get you from point A to point B with the accuracy of laser....  Now the technology used by the U.S. Miliitary was available to me.  It was cool to tap into a Satelite and feel like outer space was working for me as I traversed the dangerous Gulf Stream into Bimini's Big Game Club. Now, instead of placing me 7 feet away, under the limitations of Loran C navigation,  the lighthouse marking the entrance to Bimini would be hit dead reckoning........

This brings me to this weeks gear review.  The Garmin Forerunner 405.

Its predecessors, the 305 and the other one so big and obsolete now, that I couldn't even find myself willing to do the research for this column, have been out designed and made to look like the Acropolis of electronic sporting equipment.

Owning both the 305 and the 405, I find myself torn between choosing the right computer for my multi-sport needs.

At first glance, the 405 is small, light and sporty.  It's a watch that you can wear every day but one that you won't find for sale on Canal Street in Chinatown.  It's a running computer in my opinion and certainly not a Triathlon device like its relatively larger cousin- the 305.

With its rotating bezel and beautifully lit background screen, the smaller numbers are easy to read even when running under the sister moon.  I do however miss the display allowing me to see 4 pieces of information at one glance- all with large numbers that the 305 offers- as the 405 limits a single view to 3 pieces of data.  The 405 allows a rotating data screen, so that automatically, the data scrolls between viewing fields. I found this feature confusing at times as a result of every time I looked at the device to give me the data I needed, coincidentally it happened to be on the wrong screen.  It does allow you to manually switch between screens by tapping the bezel but its sensitivity sometimes requires me to lock the bezel to prevent the data fields from changing accidentally.

The unit is rechargeable and does allow weeks of use on standby mode which is the equivalent of serving as a timepiece.  On GPS, it has a 9 hour duration which is quite impressive.  Although for us Mac users, the wireless data transfer to computer that is still in design by Garmin prohibits me from uploading my data, friends rave on how simple and user friendly it is on their PC.

With a price somewhere in the mid $300's it is the best running computer I've used, but certainly not a replacement for the larger, heavier monolith of the 305.  I still find myself recommending the 305 to all my friends that ask me for my suggestion.

Both the 305 and the 405 can be found at Bike Tech, Swim Bike and Run and Footworks at reduced pricing for Hammerhead members......

Anyone needing to use one for a run, should feel free to call or write me and I will let you try it before you commit to purchasing one.

Ooops....  My Garmin 405 is telling me it's time to go to lunch.....

Folks,

After field testing several helmets and addressing the question as to which one works best, here are my conclusions. Frank scale is 1-10, 10 being BORI DAMN GOOD!!!

Louis Garneau Racket Air:  Bad-ass helmet with awesome ventilation, sleek look and fits comfort ably. Drawbacks are that it is noisy and the several vents make it not as aero as one would like for  the reason you are using it. Overall it gets 4.5 Franks

Louis Garneau Chrono: Awesome smaller version of the Rocket (its daddy!!!), no worries about being fully enclosed with the fact it has no ear coverage, so it is more ventilated by nature.  Downsides are fit and it too can be loud.  Overall it gets 3 Franks

Rudy Project Syton: This is the bomb when it comes to ventilated non ear covering helmets with a kick ass look.  Just look at the folks that use it; Jalaine, Billy, Andrew Johns...  Need I say more!!!  Drawbacks are the fact that it can be more aero with the ear pieces option.  Overall 7 Franks

Giro Advantage 2: Now this is the shizzle.  Look at the sexy people who use this bad boy; Linda Wiifi herself and the freekin smokin pace she is setting at all races this year!!  I used it at Ironman 70.3 World Champs last year and set a PR for me, and at St. A's as well.  It is the most popular Tri and road racing helmet for many reasons. Primarily because it meets all CSPC standards for Tri and road TT races, translated means better for your cabeza!!!  It is the most wind tunnel tested helmet with the best ratings an least drag. Drawbacks, ventilation is less than an open ear helmet, feels like you are in a rocket ship and you better win your freekin age group with it f you use it!!!  Overall 9 Franks

The final word is that unless you are going over 20mph on the bike or riding a cooler long 70.3 or IM race, the advantages of an aero helmet will be minimal for you.  True, it may look dorky, but the clear science and technology behind it are not to be overlooked.  I suggest that you train with it on ocassion and see how it feels.  You must get use to the feel of this helmet compared to your regular road skull cap!!  If you are looking for the next level of science and want to make a difference in your performance consider an aero helmet, race wheels and loosing 10 pounds DAN!!!!!!!!!!!

PS, congrats to all who did NYC TRI, also checkout the new Shimano gear for late October 2008: http://bike.shimano.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/us/index/news_and_info/news/shimano_introduces0.html

Congratulations to all the Hammerheads that participated in this weekends New York City Triathlon.  The conditions were extremely challenging with temperatures cresting into triple digits.

From vicious jellyfish attacks to blistering heat, the 305 represented in true fashion.....

At one point the announcer at the finish line said, and I quote, "Coming across the finish line now is Jim Loretta from Miami.... Frank Carino from Miami, also crossing is Amy Mangialetto from Miami, followed by Maria Andrew... also from Miami and Carolina Rubio Stol also from Miami...  WOW- are we still in New York.....??!!"

Special Mentions go out to:

Elizabeth Rodriguez for fighting hard and pushing the limits after suffering jellyfish stings that seem to far exceed those that we others suffered.

Ivanka Jotic for changing a rear tire flat under 100 degree weather and dry heated wind and seeing the race through its completion. AND for limiting her wine intake to 5 glasses the night before the race.....

Linda Wienants for finishing 7th and within the top 4% in her age group!!!  AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom MacWright for completing his first OLY in less than favorable conditions.  Way to go TMac...  Keep it up.

Yamile Castella for a solid time and a very balanced race. SOLID YAMS!!

An AMAZING race on an AMAZING day.
